Summer Is Sun Protection Time, Lovelies

I moved from the Midwest to Central Texas when I was in my twenties, and as I looked around me, I saw a lot of, well, leathery looking people. The sun is strong down there, my friends, and I was determined that my super-duper pale skin would be protected from it, just as my Grandma Lorene always preached. I started wearing face cream with sunscreen daily, and made sure to put it on my neck, too. Hats of every variety became a staple of my outside wardrobe, and even 30 years later, that remains true. The difference now, though, is sun protection products have come a really long way in safety, efficacy, and elegance. Sunscreens do expire after a year, so check your expiration dates before depending on them this summer.

  1. An absolute favorite of mine is the Mineral Sunscreen from Revive Essential Oils. It’s moisturizing, and zinc based, but doesn’t have that chalky residue look. It goes perfectly under makeup, and is suitable for the whole family. It’s also really reasonably priced, at $25.99 for TWO tubes.

2. Another sun protection item that is a daily staple for me is this sunscreen serum. It’s spf 50, has a flexible, barely-there tint, and doubles as a moisturizer. It’s packed full of beneficial skin oils and vitamins, and it just leaves your skin looking so great, even without makeup. It’s a lazy day winner, and it’s just so luxe.

3. This CC cream has been in my makeup bag for literal decades. I use it in place of foundation, but it’s nowhere near as heavy as one. It’s just enough tint to blur any imperfections, protect with 30 spf, and let your real skin shine through.

4. Brush on sunscreen powder is a simple way to protect your skin on the fly. Derma-E has been a staple of the clean beauty canon since before that became a social media buzzword, and I love them.

5. Another beloved brand of mine makes this tinted, multi-purpose sunscreen serum, and it’s very budget friendly. MyChelle cuts no corners, though – their formulas are fantastic. I have so many of their products in my bathroom cabinet.

6. The Australians know what they’re about with sunscreen, and this Blue Lizard spf 50 stick for sensitive skin is a great one to keep in your bag. Swipe it on yourself, the kids, or your partner, and they’ll hardly know you did it (ha). It’s also less than $10.

7. No day in the sun would be complete without a hat. This one is rollable, packable, breathable, drenchable, and air dryable (I may have made up a few adjectives, there). I’ve had a similar one for eons, and I’ve dunked it in every body of water I’ve come across, over several continents, and it’s served me well. It comes in several cute colors, and is under $20.

Need a hat for the kiddos, too? No problem. Lots of colors, SPF 50, less than $10.

Annnnnnd a version for the guys, if you can get him to wear it. It’s less than $15, so it’s worth a shot. This hat comes in lots of dude colors, and is packable, too.

Ok, so are we ready for fun in the sun? From the beach to the backyard, y’all, we’re set!
